Canada announces Russia/Ukraine designations

On Saturday 10 June 2023, Global Affairs Canada imposed additional sanctions against  24 individuals and 17 entities in Ukraine connected to Russia’s theft of Ukrainian cultural objects (sanctions lists, press release).  The sanctioned individuals include Ukrainians who work at museums and other cultural centres who allegedly collaborate with Russia.

The Government of Canada has also ordered the seizure of a Russian-registered cargo aircraft currently grounded at Toronto Pearson Airport, believed to be owned by a subsidiary of the sanctioned entities, Volga-Dnepr Airlines LLC and Volga-Dnepr Group (press release).  This is the first physical asset seized by Canada under the Russia regime, and second overall restrained under the Special Economic Measures Act.
